Highlight Your Hair
The most important thing you should keep in mind when you highlight your hair is that highlights should compliment your natural or artificial color.
Do not go more than three shades lighter then the rest of your hair color. If you do, the color you use will appear harsh and unnatural.
When you highlight your hair, here is what to do:
- Two days before coloring, use a clarifying shampoo to remove dirt and hair product residue.
- Never wash and shampoo your hair the day you color.
- Do a test procedure with a thin piece of your hair and small amount of highlighting product. Wait a few minutes to test for any adverse effects of color.
- Once you mix the color, use it immediately.
- Get flat 1/2 and 1/4 inch acrylic brushes.
- Use a pair of good, tight-fitting latex gloves.
- Begin from the back of your head and move forward. This way you will not smear chemicals as you go along.
- Put on the highlights only to the top layers of your hair.
- Remember that highlights are not the same as lowlights, which bring hair color down a notch or two.
There are several different products on the market available to successfully highlight your hair at home. Herbal Essences, Natural Dimensions, and HairPainting are great products.
Highlight your hair can be an effective way to cover the gray. Some women feel younger with highlights; others feel more attractive.
