Robotic Hair Transplant Surgery
A hair transplant carried out by a robot is less painful and gives a more natural look than those performed by surgeons, according to a US firm.
Restoration Robotics of Mountain View has created a robot that can pluck and move individual hair follicles on the head.
In addition, the robot performs the procedure twice as fast as surgeons, with less scarring for the patient.
Standard hair transplants usually take eight to ten hours.
Instead of removing a strip of scalp, the robot plucks healthy hair follicles individually, using suction through a 1-mm needle - about 1000 an hour. This process is guided by cameras and 3D imaging software.
After this, the robot implants the follicles into the scalp. The whole process lasts only five hours.
The robot has another huge benefit – it can design the hairline on a computer giving the transplanted hair a more natural look.
The machine will undergo clinical trials by the end of the year.
