Causes of Hair Loss in Women
The most common causes of hair loss in women are not related to inherited genes but typically associated with other factors such as stress, pregnancy, certain diets, chemotherapy, thyroid hormone deficiency, some drugs or infections. The hair loss in these cases is generally temporary and healthy re-growth can happen over time.
It is important to understand causes of hair loss in women before you seek out a remedy or solution.
Causes of hair loss in women:
1. Genetics: The most common cause of hair loss in women is rooted in your genes also known as androgenetic alopecia. Hereditary hair loss can start any time after puberty, but generally sets in before the age of 40 and could speed up around the time you reach menopause.
2. Pregnancy: A large amount of estrogen is produced during pregnancy causing the hair follicles to go into their hair loss phase. After the birth is completed the hormonal balance is restored and the opposite happens with the hair follicles going into a growth phase.
3. Alopecia areata: The reasons for this are somewhat unknown but a research suggests that the cause could be an auto immune disorder where the body erroneously attacks the hair follicles.
4. Stress: Among many causes of hair loss in women is stress as known as Telogen Effluvium. This happens when the growing healthy hair enters the resting (telogen) phase of hair growth. Women in their 40’s to 60’s will be affected by this kind of hair loss.
5. Drugs or Supplements: The most usual drug treatment that causes hair loss in women is chemotherapy. It attacks the hair cells causing 90 percent hair loss from the scalp. Prescription drugs, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol drugs are also known to thin hair out. Some dieting supplements could also be causes of hair loss in women.
6. Hair pulling: Also known as trichotillomania. This is not a medical but a psychological disorder. There are millions of people around the worlds that suffer from this condition. This condition can be treated with counseling.
