Post Pregnancy Hair Loss
Child birth can lead to sudden hair loss in women. As a matter of fact, a lot of women suffer from post pregnancy hair loss, known as Postpartum Alopecia - somewhere between 40 to 50% of women. It is normal for many women to become aware of hair loss after pregnancy.
Post pregnancy hair loss can happen at different times; it can occur after parturition or after nursing ends. You should remember that it is normal to experience hair loss after pregnancy - up to 6 months to a year after childbirth.
Post pregnancy hair loss is caused by hormones. Giving birth to a child lead to hormonal changes in the woman’s body. There are very low levels of estrogen in a woman’s body after childbirth, and a decreased level of estrogen is one major cause of hair loss.
The rise in hormones during pregnancy, keeps hair that would have normally fallen out. After delivery, the hormones return to normal levels, which allow the hair to fall out and return to the normal cycle. The normal hair loss that had been delayed because of pregnancy tends to happen at the same time.
There is no real cure for post pregnancy hair loss because it is temporary. But it is crucial to understand that in most cases involving hair loss after pregnancy, the new hair is already growing in while old hair is falling out.
However, there are some things that you can do to reduce the extent of post pregnancy hair loss:
- Visit your doctor to balance your hormones.
- Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
- Use shampoos and conditioners that contain biotin and silica.
- Avoid pigtails, cornrows, hair weaves, braids and tight hair rollers.
There are many hair styling techniques suitable for new moms. You can use a volumizing tonic. Another idea to correct post pregnancy hair loss is to go for a new hair style – you can choose a shorter haircut. You can also pick hair accessories such as temporary hair extensions.
