Medical Reasons for Hair Loss in Women

There are many reasons for hair loss in women. However, women’s hair is especially sensitive to underlying medical conditions.

Here is six women’s health factors usually linked to female hair loss:

1. Menopause. Hair thinning almost always takes place is women undergoing menopause. This condition is caused by the reduction in the production of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.

2. Post-pregnancy. When woman is pregnant, her hair grows faster due to increase in hormones. As a result, hair follicles stay longer in the growth phase. But, after baby is born, shedding and thinning occurs due to the rapid drop in hormones.

3. Crash dieting is another reason for hair loss. Your hair follicles can suffer shock because of rapid weight loss or unhealthy dieting. This can lead to increased shedding that could go on for months (or even for an indefinite period.

4. Traction Alopecia. Some hairstyles (such as tight braiding) as well as hair extensions can damage hair follicles and cause permanent bald spots.

5. Trichotillomania or compulsive hair pulling can also be the reason for permanent bald spots.

6. Trauma and serious emotional stress can lead to thinning and extreme shedding that can persist for several weeks.

Do not hesitate to visit your doctor if sudden excessive hair loss is happening. If possible, see a physician who specializes in hair loss in women. After tests are done, he/she will be able to prescribe you appropriate medicine if necessary.

After these medical conditions are gone, your hair health will be restored.
