What is Hair Brushing Syndrome?

There is a lot of news lately about something called hair brushing syndrome. A number of newspapers reported about a British teenager, Megan Stewart, 13, who could die if she brushes her hair.

So, what is hair brushing syndrome?

It's a very rare medical condition and it means that a person who is diagnosed with it, must avoid static electricity at all costs because it can become lethal. The brain just shuts down!

Megan and other persons with the condition must avoid any activities that can create static in their hair and even wearing shiny, polyester clothing is not allowed.

Megan is dealing with the syndrome in a way that she lays down (with her hair hanging over the side of her bed ) and covers her head with water when combing her hair in order to prevent any static build up.

Doctors know little about hair brushing syndrome, but they believe that it may be a result of birth complications.

Megan's mother, Sharon, was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure caused by a problem with the placenta) in the sixth month of her pregnancy. Megan weighed just 2lb 5oz when she was born and also has a number of other health complications.
