FDA Warns About Brazilian Blowout Dangers

The makers of Brazilian Blowout have received a warning letter from the FDA. They are warned that their product contains dangerously high levels of formaldehyde.

This chemical is called a cancer-causing substance by the National Cancer Institute.

Brazilian Blowout is a beauty product that give women straight, frizz-free hair.

The FDA is warning the makers to stop misleading consumers and start disclosing its formaldehyde content. Current labels and advertising state that the products are formaldehyde-free.

This hair formula will be “removed from shelves” unless compliant with guidelines now issued by the Food and Drug Administration.

The federal agency tested 50 mg samples of Brazilian Blowout and found dangerously high levels of the liquid form of formaldehyde, ranging from 8.7% to 10.4%.

This is much higher than the 0.1%  considered safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel.

Salon workers and consumers reported to the FDA a number of injuries, including eye disorders, nervous system disorders, respiratory tract problems, chest pain, vomiting and rash.

Mike Brady, the chief executive for Brazilian Blowout, maintains that the treatment is within the safety limits of the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
