Hair Shedding Causes – Divorce, Smoking and Drinking

It is well known that main hair shedding causes for both men and women are age and genetics. Now two new studies found new contributors to hair loss in both female and male individuals.

The studies revealed that being a divorcee, widow, heavy smoker or drinker can cause hair loss, especially in women.

In the first study, the researchers examined 84 female identical twins. They found that martial status is the strongest predictor of female hair loss. Those who were divorced or widowed showed more hair loss than married women.

Additional hair shedding causes were found. A large weekly consumption of alcohol led to higher levels of female hair loss along the front of the head. Heavy smoking was a significant contributor to female hair loss in the temple area.

A second study looked at 66 male identical twins. It found that while genetics was the strongest predictor of male hair loss along the front of the head, smoking, heavy sun exposure and dandruff were also important contributors.

However, additional hair shedding causes were identified. Medical conditions like hypertension, a lack of regular exercise, and elevated testosterone levels also contributed to increased rates of hair loss in men.
