Women experience most hair loss during the autumn months. This is according to a study of more than 800 healthy women who were followed over a period of six years.
Why is autumn the prime time for hair loss? To understand why, you need to know how human hair grows.
It grows between 2 and 6 years. About 90% of your hair is in the growth stage, while 10% is in a resting state (the telogen stage) that lasts between 2 to 6 months, before hair falls out.
After the hair falls out, the hair follicle rests for 90 days before the whole process is repeated.
Swedish researchers found that women have the most hairs in the resting stage in July, which means that the telogen state in most women ends around 100 days later, in October.
Scientists believe that evolution is responsible for this pattern: human body keeps hair during the summer in order to protect the scalp from hot sun and its rays.
The study is published in the journal Dermatology.
