Allergic Reaction to Hair Dye Takes Another Victim!

A woman who suffered a severe allergic reaction to hair dye has been given only 8% chance of survival! Mother Julie McCabe, 38, from the north of England, is currently on life support. Doctors said that even if she does survive, she will have permanent brain damage.

Julie fell into coma after using L’Oreal Preference dye. It is believed that a chemical in the hair dye called para-Phenylenediamine or PPD caused the allergic reaction.

PPD is used in permanent hair colors to dye light or grey hair a darker shade. The chemical is banned in France, Germany and Sweden. An American study has found that exposure to it can increase rates of bladder cancer.

Allergy to PPD, which is present in 99% of all hair colors, is very rare, affecting one in 250,000 people, and in most cases the effect is a mild rash.

A few weeks ago, there was another case in the UK where Tabatha McCourt, 17, collapsed and died 20 minutes after coloring her hair.

This case once again proves the importance of doing a patch test. It means that you should apply a small amount of dye to your skin 48 hours before treatment every time you use it.
