Chemical treatments, such as coloring, relaxing, or straightening, make hair shafts more porous. As a result, hair is more prone to damage.
Some people believe that chemically altering hair is a guaranteed way to damage it. This is not true. Only repeatedly applied chemical processes, for example bleaching or relaxing, will destroy hair shafts permanently.
Here are some tips for chemically treated hair:
- Wait 24 hours after coloring your hair before shampooing.
- Use a shampoo for damaged or color-treated hair 3 times a week; after shampooing apply a protein-based conditioner.
- African-American women should shampoo only once a week; they should also condition with a water-soluble conditioning oil.
- Use a leave-in conditioner with antioxidants and UV filters.
- Avoid greasy, petroleum-based products.
Good products for chemically-treated hair:
- Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Breakage Defense Shampoo.
- Redken Smooth Down Detangling Cream Leave-In Smoother.
- Carol’s Daughter Tui Hair Oil.
