Medications That Can Cause Hair Loss
There are certain medications that are known to cause hair loss. The list of these medicines is long, but here are the most common ones (hair loss happens in more than 5% of people taking these medications):
- Heparin
- Interferon
- Accutane
- Altace
- Klonopin and valproic acid (anticonvulsant drugs)
Medicines that less commonly cause hair loss (but can cause balding side effects) include:
- Acyclovir
- Lupron
- Cyclosporin
- Certain anti-arrhythmia medications
- High doses of naproxen
- Antidepressants such as Paxil, Zoloft and Effexor
Chemotherapy and radiation treatment often cause hair loss because it stops hair cells from dividing.
