Hair Color and Cancer
Is there a link between hair dye and cancer?
Hairdressers are at an increased risk of developing cancer because of the products they work with, according to the World Health Organization.
Among male hairdressers and barbers, the risk of the bladder cancer was between 20% and 60% higher compared with the general population.
This risk is described as “small but consistent” and is less visible among women.
Among both men and women, some studies pointed to a heightened risk of 30% for lung cancer
Permanent colors are particularly dangerous with dark hair dyes carrying the greatest risk.
The working group of the International Agency for Research on Cancer also looked at the personal use of hair dyes but decided there was not enough evidence to come to a conclusion as to whether or not the practice would lead to an increased cancer risk.
The group added the following to the list of definite or probable carcinogens:
•   Ortho-Toluidine
•   4-Chloro-ortho-toluidine
•   4,4′-Methylenebis
•   Benzidine-based dyes
The report is published in the April issue of The Lancet Oncology.
