Some women have experienced unpleasant “brassy blonde” look. This happens when blond color takes on orange-yellow tone.
There are some steps that will help you tone down brassy blonde hair. Here are some tips.
- You must leave the hair coloring long enough to lift out the color. If you remove it before this occurs, your hair will stay in the orange stage, which is part of the natural progression to blonde.
- You need to use the right product. You may experience brassy hair if your hair is too dark for the coloring you plan to use. In this case, hair dyes of 2 to 3 shades are not enough. They will leave you in the orange range. You must use products with 3 to 4 shades.
- Brassy hair also appears if your water supply is high in iron deposits. In this case, use a water softener with an iron filter. Use a demineralizing shampoo to remove iron deposits already present.
- Use a blue shampoo to fix unwanted brassiness. These shampoos, such as Shimmer Lights shampoo, mask hair that has turned brassy.
- Use a toner a violet or blue base to mask any brassy tones. The only downside is that toners have a tendency to wash out of the hair over several weeks so the brassiness may come back.
