Backcombing Hair Explained

How to Back Comb Your Hair

What exactly is backcombing? Teasing, ratting and backcombing are actually all the same thing.

It is a method of combing your hair in order to create volume and more fullness as well as to create some hair styles.

Backcombing involves repeatedly combing your hair towards the scalp, in a direction that is opposite to the hair’s natural growth pattern. This causes the hair to tangle and knot up.

This technique is frequently used in creating a variety of big hairstyles such as beehives and dreadlocks. Backcombing is also used for spot styling bangs hawks, faux hawks, quiffs, full Mohawks. Here is how to backcomb.

- Hold a small section of hair 90 degrees off the scalp in 1-inch sections.

- Using a fine-tooth comb, comb down your hair shaft starting mid-length.

- Do this several times to create a little nest.

- Comb back the sections gently using a bristle brush to smooth over and style as desired.

Backcombing can cause serious and progressive damage to the hair’s integrity. Over time, this leads to weakening and breakage. It can also cause tangles near the root that are extremely difficult to remove.

Regular backcombing is not recommended for people who would like to maintain long hair.
