Scientists have finally discovered why hair turns gray.
The discovery may lead to a method to stop us turning gray in old age.
A team of European scientists found that going gray is caused by a massive build up of hydrogen peroxide due to wear and tear of our hair follicles.
The hydrogen peroxide (used by women to dye their hair blonde) blocks the normal synthesis of melanin, the hair’s natural pigment responsible for its color.
The researchers discovered that the hydrogen peroxide build-up was caused from the reduction of an enzyme called catalase that breaks apart hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
They also discovered that hair follicles could not repair the damage caused by the hydrogen peroxide because of low levels of enzymes that normally serve this function.
The study appears online in The FASEB Journal; the FASEB is the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.
So, forget the notion that gray hair is a sign of wisdom; it has nothing to do with it!
