New, Safer Hair Dyes are Coming

Scientists are planning to make safe hair dyes out of seaweed from around the Shetland Islands!

Scientists at the University of Leeds will extract chemical compounds from different species of seaweed and use them to develop a new range of hair colors.

These natural compounds will be used as substitutes for synthetic ingredients that can be found in the majority of hair dyes available on the market.

Many synthetic compounds are allergens and some chemicals, such as PPD, can cause serious long-term health problems.

Scientists think that they will be able to make a range of colors including blonde, brown, red, and even black, using the seaweed extracts.

“We are hoping to be able to offer people a real alternative to current hair dyes that contain chemicals which are known to be very bad for you,” explains project leader Dr Richard Blackburn.
