Cause of Naturally Curly Hair Discovered

Many women do everything they can to get rid of their naturally curly hair. 15% of European people have curly hair.

But why do some people are born with curly hair?

Australian scientists at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research have found the answer.

They have identified a gene responsible for creating such hair. The main gene responsible for creating curls is the trichohyalin. It plays key role in the development of the hair follicle.

Researchers found that a variation in this gene determines the straightness or curliness of hair. They now must determine which variant of the gene influences hair curliness.

It is believed that the new facts will have implications for the cosmetics industry.

The study appears in the American Journal of Human Genetics.
