In a layered hairstyle, the top layers are cut shorter than the layers beneath. This gives the illusion of length (with long hair) and volume (with short hair). The tips of the top layers are blended seamlessly with layers beneath.
However, newer versions of the hairstyle do not blend seamlessly – there is a clear distinction between the various layers.
Here are step-by-step rules on how to cut layers in your own hair:
- Shampoo and condition your hair but don’t dry it. Leave it wet. If you hair dries too fast, use a spray bottle of water or mouse during the process of cutting your hair.
- Next you need to comb your hair straight back.
- Using a comb, evenly section off approximately one half inch of hair (the same way when cutting bangs). However, continue the section all the way down your face in front of the ears. Keep the rest of your hair out of the way – just leave it combed str?ight back.
- Get the top-section hair forward and down in front of your eyes. Cut the section of hair straight across to the outer edges of your eyes. Make sure you are using sharp scissors that are meant for cutting hair. This first cut should be at the tip of your nose. Never cut higher than the bridge of your nose. The resulting line will be your length guide for cutting the rest of your hair.
- Next you should comb this section straight up. Hold your hair between your index and middle finger and snip off the very tips of this section. Don’t bend your fingers while doing this. This is done in order to get a straight line. Keep in mind that if you cut too much, you will have a shorter haircut.
- Comb the sides of the section straight up taking with it some of the hair you’ve just cut. You will see how the sides are longer than the cut section. Now you need to make your next cuts straight across. You will do this by holding the side sections straight up and using the bangs cut as your guide. Let the hair go and you will see that it falls into layers.
- Using your comb, section off a new small part of hair from ear to ear. Comb it forward and keep the rest of your hair straight back. Comb the new section of hair straight up, taking with it the first section as your cutting guide. You will be able to see where the first section was cut and the new section that you need to cut. Cut the second section evenly with the first. Pull the side sections straight up again to cut it even with the bang area.
- Keep on sectioning and taking the hair straight up and cutting across using the guide lines from each previous cut. Do this all the way to the back of your head. Do not section off too much for each new cut.
Make sure your hair stays fairly wet through this process.
