Homemade Hair Care Recipes - Part 1
Natural Hair Conditioners, Lotions and Treatments
Avocado Deep Conditioner
Ingredients:
• 1 small jar of mayonnaise
• 1/2 avocado
Directions:
1. Peel avocado and remove pit;
2. Mix all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl with your hands until it's a consistent green color;
3. Smooth into hair being careful to work it to the ends;
4. Use shower cap or plastic wrap to seal body heat in;
5. Leave on hair for 20 minutes;
6. For deeper conditioning wrap a hot, damp towel around your head over the plastic, or use a hair dryer set to a low to medium heat setting.
Avocado Conditioner
Ingredients:
• 2 teaspoons avocado oil
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 2 teaspoons canola oil
• 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
• 2 teaspoons coconut oil
• 2 teaspoons honey
Directions:
1. In a saucepan, slowly heat all ingredients except for the honey;
2. Remove from heat and let cool;
3. Add honey and stir until well mixed;
4. Massage the mixture into the hair;
5. Comb through and leave on for 15 - 20 minutes;
6. Rinse with warm water.
Tropical Island Conditioner
Ingredients:
• 1 avocado
• Coconut milk
Directions:
1. Peel and pit avocado;
2. Mash avocado;
3. Slowly add coconut milk until smooth and the consistency of hair conditioner;
4. Work through hair to ends;
5. Rinse after 15 minutes and shampoo.
Jojoba Oil & Beer Conditioner
Ingredients:
• 1 cup WARM beer
• 1 teaspoon jojoba oil
Directions:
1. Mix all ingredients;
2. Apply to hair and massage through;
3. Rinse well;
4. You may want to shampoo afterward if your hair remains oily.
Mayo Conditioner for Dry Hair
Ingredients:
• Mayonnaise
Directions:
1. Apply 1/2 cup of mayonnaise to your dry hair;
2. Work into hair really well;
3. Cover your hair with a plastic bag;
4. Set for about 15 minutes;
5. Rinse thoroughly;
6. Shampoo as usual.
Dried Milk Conditioner
Ingredients:
• Dried milk
• Wheat germ oil
• Egg
Directions:
1. In a blender combine 2 1/2 tablespoons dried milk, 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil, and 1 egg;
2. Apply evenly to hair;
3. Let set for at least an hour;
4. Shampoo.
Sesame & Coconut Hair Conditioner
Ingredients:
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 2 tablespoons light sesame oil
• 2 whole eggs
• 2 tablespoons coconut milk
• 2 tablespoons honey
• 1 teaspoon coconut oil
Directions:
1. In a blender, mix all ingredients together on low for 30 seconds;
2. Shampoo and rinse with your shampoo of choice;
3. Apply conditioning mixture to the hair;
4. Massage in with your fingers;
5. Leave on for 5 minutes ;
6. Rinse with warm water.
Nettle Hair Lotion
Ingredients:
• 1 cup nettle tops
Directions:
1. Simmer nettles in three cups of water;
2. Strain;
3. Rub into hair and scalp every other night for soft, shiny hair;
4. Keep refrigerated.
Olive Oil Hair Lotion
Ingredients:
• Olive oil
• Honey
Directions:
1. Combine 4 tablespoons olive oil and 2 tablespoons honey in a glass jar with a lid
2. Shake until well blended;
3. Let mixture sit for 3 to 4 days, and shake it occasionally;
4. Rub mixture evenly into dry hair;
5. Wrap hair in plastic wrap, letting set for at least an hour;
6. Shampoo as usual.
Sugar Hair Lotion
Ingredients:
• Sugar
Directions:
1. Dissolve 1 teaspoon sugar in 1 cup warm water;
2. Apply to damp hair before styling.
Vegetable Oil Hair Lotion
Ingredients:
• Vegetable oil
• Egg
Directions:
1. Mix together 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and 1 egg;
2. Apply to hair;
3. Let set for about an hour;
4. Shampoo as usual.
Jojoba Hot Oil Treatment
Ingredients:
• 2 teaspoons jojoba oil
• 1 teaspoon soybean oil
Directions:
1. Combine ingredients then warm gently on low heat;
2. Test temperature on inside of forearm;
3. Massage mixture into hair;
4. Wrap hair in a hot towel or cover with shower cap or plastic wrap for 15 minutes;
5. Shampoo & rinse out;
6. Recipe may be doubled for very long hair.
Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment
Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup of dried rosemary leaves
• 1/2 cup soybean oil
Directions:
1. Combine ingredients and heat until warm;
2. Strain through a fine strainer or cheesecloth;
3. Coat the entire head and hair with the oil mixture, working it through to the ends;
4. Wrap hair in plastic wrap and wrap in a warm towel;
5. Leave oil on hair for 15 minutes;
6. Wash hair until oil is completely removed.
Deep Conditioning Treatment for Dry Damaged Hair
Ingredients:
• 2 Tbs. Soy protein Powder
• 1 cup milk or juice
• 1/4 cup fresh, canned or frozen fruit
• ice
Directions:
1. Mix in a blender until smooth and creamy;
2. Apply to the hair;
3. Do this once a week.
Hot Oil Treatment for Damaged Hair
Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup soybean oil
• 8 drops oil of sandalwood
• 8 drops oil of lavender
• 8 drops oil geranium
Directions:
1. Mix all ingredients well;
2. Warm oil to a comfortable temperature;
3. Apply the mixture to damp hair;
4. Wrap hair in plastic wrap and apply a hot towel for 20 minutes;
5. Shampoo.
Lavender Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment
Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup soybean oil
• 5 drops oil of rosemary
• 10 drops oil of lavender
Directions:
1. Mix all ingredients well;
2. Warm slightly and apply the mixture to damp hair;
3. Wrap hair in plastic wrap and apply a hot towel for 20 minutes;
4. Shampoo.
Ginger Dandruff Treatment
Ingredients:
• Ginger root
• 1 teaspoon sesame oil
• 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Directions:
1. Squeeze ginger root through press to obtain one tablespoon of juice;
2. Mix all ingredients;
3. Apply to scalp and let dry before shampooing;
4. Repeat three times a week.
Dandruff Treatment
Ingredients:
• Dried thyme
Directions:
1. Boil 7 heaping tablespoons dried thyme in 2 cups water for 10 minutes;
2. Strain and cool;
3. Pour 1/2 mixture over clean, damp hair;
4. Massage into scalp, do not rinse.
Mayo Treatment
Ingredients:
• Mayonnaise
Directions:
1. To give hair a special treatment, use real mayonnaise;
2. Gently massage about half a cup of it into your hair;
3. Rinse completely.
Natural Hair Dye and Color Enhancers
Chamomile Brightener for Blonde Hair
Ingredients:
• 6 chamomile tea bags
• 1/2 cup plain yogurt
• Lavender oil
Directions:
1. Bring one cup of water to boil and steep tea bags for 15 minutes;
2. Discard teabags;
3. Combine yogurt and 7 drops of lavender oil with chamomile tea;
4. Mix thoroughly;
5. Apply the mixture to dry hair, working through to ends;
6. Cover head in plastic wrap and condition for thirty minutes;
7. Shampoo hair.
Natural Brunette Hair Dye
Ingredients:
• Triple strength black coffee
Directions:
1. Shampoo hair.
2. Place a large bowl in sink and rinse hair with cooled coffee;
3. Repeat several times, reusing the coffee;
4. Leave final rinse in hair for at least 15 minutes;
5. Rinse with clear water.
Red Hair Color Enhancer
Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup beet juice
• 1/2 cup carrot juice
Directions:
1. Mix ingredients together, pour over clean, damp hair;
2. Wrap head in plastic and apply hot towel, medium dryer heat, or sit in the sun for one hour.
3. Shampoo.
Super Conditioning Henna Color
Ingredients:
• Henna color in powder form
• Deep conditioner
Directions:
1. Mix henna using half the water as directed on the package;
2. Add your favorite deep conditioner to the mixture until desired consistency is reached;
3. Apply to hair, working through hair thoroughly;
4. Leave on hair following directions as indicated on package;
5. Shampoo;
6. May be used with colorless henna to increase volume of fine hair without adding color.
Natural Color Restorer for Gray Hair
Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup dried sage
• 1/4 cup dried rosemary
Directions:
1. Simmer rosemary and sage in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes;
2. Steep for several hours;
3. Apply to gray hair and allow to dry, then shampoo;
4. Repeat weekly until desired shade is reached, then once a month for maintenance.
Blonde Highlights
Ingredients:
• Lemon juice
• chamomile tea
Directions:
1. Juice three lemons into a litre of warm water;
2. Apply to dry hair;
3. Rinse out after ten minutes.
or,
1. Steep six bags of chamomile tea in a litre of hot water;
2. Apply to hair once cool;
3. Leave in for twenty minutes.
Natural Shampoos and Hair Fresheners
Chamomile Shampoo
Ingredients:
• 6 chamomile tea bags
• 4 tablespoons pure soap flakes
• 1 1/2 tablespoons glycerin
Directions:
1. Steep the teabags in 1 1/2 cups of boiled water for 20 minutes;
2. Remove the tea bags and discard;
3. Add the soap flakes to the tea and let stand until the soap softens;
4. Stir in glycerin until well blended;
5. Keep in a dark, cool place in a sealed bottle.
Dry Shampoo for Oily Hair
Ingredients:
• Cornstarch
Directions:
1. Dip large soft makeup brush in cornstarch and dust through oily spots in hair;
2. Allow to sit for five minutes then brush out with a natural boar bristle brush;
3. Repeat as necessary.
Natural Shampoo for Normal Hair
Ingredients:
• 1/4 cup water
• 1/4 cup liquid Castile Soap
• 1/2 teaspoon sunflower or other light vegetable oil
Directions:
1. Mix together all the ingredients;
2. Store in a bottle;
3. Use as you would any shampoo, rinse well.
Wonder of the Desert Shampoo for Dry Hair
Ingredients:
• 1/4 cup liquid Castile Soap
• 1/4 cup aloe vera gel
• 1 teaspoon glycerin
• 1/4 teaspoon avocado oil or other light vegetable oil
Directions:
1. Mix together all the ingredients;
2. Store in a bottle and always shake well before using;
3. Apply to hair and allow to sit for a few minutes;
4. Rinse well with cool water.
